Kim Lower, Au.D.

CCC-A, Audiologist

Dr. Kim Lower joined Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center in September of 2022.  She graduated from Flagler College with a B.A. degree in Deaf Education, the University of Virginia with a M.Ed. in Audiology and Arizona School of Health Sciences with an Au.D. in Audiology. Dr. Lower brings over 30 years of experience in various areas of audiology with her most recent experience being the lead Audiologist at Jefferson Surgical Clinic for the past 15 years. 

Dr. Lower holds a state license from the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, Board for Hearing Aid Specialists and Opticians and a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.

Fun Fact: Dr. Lower loves to travel - a personal goal of hers is to visit all 7 continents!

Melissa Patterson, M.S.

CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

Melissa Patterson has been with the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center as a Speech-Language Pathologist since 2009. She earned her B.A. degree in Communication Disorders from Marshall University and M.S. degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Radford University. Melissa brings 21 years of experience from a variety of settings, including the school system, nursing home facilities, contract positions, home health, and outpatient clinics. She is also a certified Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) LOUD provider, a voice treatment for individuals with Parkinson's Disease.  She also serves as a Board Member for the Parkinson's Support Group in Roanoke. Her areas of specialty include voice disorders, adult swallowing disorders, aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive impairment. Melissa holds a state license from the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Her favorite part of her job is helping others communicate and developing relationships with families.

Fun Fact: Melissa loves to read and enjoys camping with her husband and 3 sons!

Marty Smolak

Audiology Assistant

Marty joined the Roanoke Valley Speech & Hearing Center in November 2016. As the Audiology Assistant, she assists the Audiologists and patients with their hearing health care at the Center. She is originally from West Virginia, but relocated to Roanoke in 2012.  She has a wide range of healthcare experience and a passion for helping our clients. She has two sons and one grandson. She enjoys music, gardening, cooking and fishing!

Fun Fact: Marty's other passion is DECORATING! Helping others re-decorate their homes on a budget - design on a dime! 

Akirah Mattox, M.Ed

CF - SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

Akirah Mattox joined the RVSHC team in January 2022. She earned her B.A. in Psychology and M. Ed. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Virginia. She is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is currently completing her Clinical Fellowship to earn her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. 

Fun fact: Akirah enjoys reading and spending time with friends and family!

Charlie Carney

CAOHC Certified, Hearing Conservationist

Charlie joined the RVSHC staff in August 2016. He is our Hearing Conservationist and travels with the Center’s mobile unit to conduct industrial hearing testing for industries with loud noise environments. He is from Greenbrier, West Virginia. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Concord University along with MBA work through Averett.

Fun Fact: He and his wife, Angel, have two daughters, Cate and Sarah. He enjoys reading, fishing, whitewater canoeing, camping and hunting.
